Hilary Duff has gone from girl-next-door looks with funky patterns and sparkly accessories on Lizzie McGuire, edgy rocker vibes on stage as herself to over-the-top stage costumes with fake fur, nods to Lizzie and the early 2000s style, as well as impeccable, stylish and practical looks for everyday errands and being a mom on the go.

I have always admired Hilary Duff’s style. Not only was Lizzie McGuire iconic in her outfits on the show, but Hilary Duff had a style all her own, following trends but with her own personality. So many monumental moments in my own life were copied after some of her red carpet looks. I usually had to get very creative with my budget and resources, but it was about taking the essence of what she was wearing and creating my own look.

Whether it was the Asian influence from the red carpet kimono at the Kid’s Choice Awards or her look from the Vanity Fair Teens edition cover. She was the inspiration I used for many of those moments in my own life.

Looking at Lizzie

Lizzie was not afraid to wear funky patterns - zebra and flowers together? Now, that truly is groundbreaking, but not for her. It was bold, but quirky and on trend. The girl loved to accessorize. Sparkles, rhinestones, denim - she did it all.

There were also the “what was she thinking?” like tie-dye shirt and flowered pants. Or the unicorn sweater that her parents wanted her to wear for her school pictures.

Can we also talk about the hair? Half up, half down; straight; curled; or even crimped. And, of course, she also knew how to pair a bandana, head scarf or a headband to round out the ensemble.

Hilary’s Glam

In Hilary’s younger years - the 2000s were such an iconic, bubblegum pop ode to girlhood, if ever there was one. She also had the accessories — hats, purses, scarves (oh, the scarves with the tank tops). She wasn’t afraid to be girly, a little extra and accessible in her fashion choices.

While her fashion and the trends have changed, she’s still in style and rocks a classic look. She’s traded the silks and sequins for jeans and t-shirts. She’s a mix of New York City and Los Angeles.

One thing’s for sure. she is still the epitome of cool girl.

Outfit Ideas

As my best friend and I prepare for the concert, we are brainstorming idea for outfits. She suggested something Lizzie related. But, I’ve started thinking just doing something simple that pays tribute to the Y2k days — you know, the butterflies, the glitter, the boots, the satin pants, baggier jeans and sort of cheesy materials. These are just a few of the items I’ve come across that have piqued my interest - patterns, materials, outlines/vibes, if you will of what I’m hoping to find.

But, we still have about a month to go before the show — a lot could change in between now and then.

Accessories are over the top - Again, more glitter, rhinestones, charms, and so on. There are plenty of hair clips - stars, butterflies, hair jewels and other items that we just seemed to wear on a normal basis. So, why not break those out for a special occasion now?

Makeup will be bright, bold and fun.

Beverly Hills 90210.

Which is actually pretty crazy, because it’s so on brand for me.

A teen drama? Set in the ‘90s? An Aaron Spelling masterpiece? A show with plenty of behind-the-scenes drama and coming of age angst?

Say less.

I’ve also always been a big Jennie Garth fan, thanks to her work with Amanda Bynes on “What I Like About You” in the early 2000s. And Beverly Hills 90210 is quintessential Jennie Garth.

I’ve always wondered why it’s such a cultural phenomenon.

Why do people still lose their minds when they meet cast members at conventions? How are they still so passionate about which teams they’re on, who Kelly should have chosen, what it means when she chose herself and so many other references I’ve seen heard throughout the years.

I guess it could be said of many shows — Powerful fandoms that are passionate, creative and outspoken for it all these years later. I’m part of several others.

As we transition into the summer months, I figured I’d go through the series and give myself a little project.

You can expect:

• Character profiles/diaries;

• Thematic breakdowns;

• Costumes;

• The culture and commentary on what held up, what didn’t;

• What 90210 taught me about…;

• Watching BH 90210 as a 30-something (because it’s going to be a much different experience than if I was watching in real-time or when I was younger); and

• Some other fun as we go!

So I look forward to getting started on this little adventure!

Books That Shaped Me

As far as I can think back in my life, I’ve always had a book in my hand. Especially after I actually learned to read! I had a bookcase filled with Disney Goldenbooks, picture books and Bible stories. My parents and grandparents always read with me, using the voices and character mannerisms, they encouraged my love of reading with trips to the library or bookstores. From there, the chapter books got longer. It drew me into relatable characters, heartfelt stories and fun settings. As I started writing more on my own, I craved those worlds and pages that you could jump right into and feel at home. Here are just a few that have meant something to me along the way.
